Nubia announce launch date for Z80 Ultra

Nubia have got another Ultra phone coming and this time around it is called the Z80 Ultra and it will be launching in China very soon.

Nubia has alway put a lot of focus on their high end camera line up the Z series and this one is no exception. The new phone will of course be running on the newest processor the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

It will feature a 144Hz OLED Full-screen display with an under-display selfie camera. Charging is rumoured to cap out at 90W wired, although there’s no mention of wireless charging. However, this isn’t usually the case with Nubia devices, so I wouldn’t be surprised by its exclusion here either. The battery is purportedly going to be 7100mAh, which puts it up there with one of the bigger batteries on offer at the moment.

However none of these things make it a Nubia Ultra device as that is all down to the camera

The upcoming Z80 Ultra introduces several noteworthy improvements to its camera system, starting with a completely reworked ultra-wide lens. This new 18mm-equivalent ultra-wide camera features a larger 1/1.55-inch sensor, which should allow for better light capture and improved dynamic range, particularly in low-light conditions. The lens itself is constructed with seven optical elements (7P), optimised to reduce distortion and enhance corner-to-corner sharpness. Additionally, the inclusion of a coated IR filter helps minimise unwanted infrared light, ensuring that colours remain accurate and free of chromatic aberrations.

Complementing the ultra-wide camera is a 35mm main lens paired with a 1/1.3-inch Omnivision 990 sensor, a highly capable unit known for delivering rich detail and natural colour reproduction. This combination is expected to excel in both daylight and night photography, taking advantage of the larger pixel size and modern computational imaging techniques.

The third sensor remains more mysterious, but early details confirm that it will support a 50x hybrid zoom and optical image stabilisation (OIS), which should aid in capturing distant subjects with clarity. Its capabilities appear to align closely with those of the Z70 Ultra and Z70S Ultra, suggesting that it may use the same 64MP telephoto module featuring a 2.7x optical zoom. If so, this sensor will likely excel at medium-range telephoto shots while leveraging digital zoom and AI processing to achieve the extended 50x reach.

Altogether, the Z80 Ultra’s camera array seems to promise not only versatility but also significant improvements in optical quality and low-light performance, positioning it as a strong contender for mobile photography enthusiasts.

They’ve also released information on the colours the device will come in. Alongside the standard white and black versions, there will be the beautiful Starry Night-inspired version as seen below.

I know that this was a fan favourite from the Nubia Z70 series so I am excited to see it on the new Z80 Ultra soon.
